but
This is an explaination I wrote for a friend. A love letter to the movie and how it affected me. I wanted to share this with others. I hope it also reaches someone else and convinces them to give this film a shot. Thank you for reading

Bones and All

At its roots, this is a movie about finding community, a sense of self & a reason to keep living in a world where your entire existence is seen at 'dirty' and something to be feared.

We see our main protagonist, from a young age isolated from her peers & almost any family she's ever known.
On the morning of the 18th birthday she wakes up to find a note on the kitchen counter from her father.
He can't do this anymore.

He's protected her and given his whole world to her for 18 years but now he just, doesn't have it in him.
She's grown now and he knows she'll be just fine.

Now she is alone.

We follow her travelling cross country, meeting others with the same 'dirty' condition as her.
An older man, far too eager gain her trust.
He makes us all uneasy.
A couple of backwater folks who, as it turns out only one of wich has this condition. The other is just an impassioned voyeur to it all.

Its..hard to find safety in a world where anyone like you has been vilified and broken. There are many monsters we see her brush with until she eventually meets someone else like her. They try not to get attached to each other but also both desperately want to dig their nails into any genuine connection they can and never let go.

We see glimpses of pasts we never truly see a resolution for and in the end, that's okay.

It's a story that oozes with queer subtext, even while the two leads are seemingly 'straight passing'.
They both need to learn to trust someone again, to stop hiding themselves.

To give yourself so completely to someone you feel like you could press your chests together, interlock your ribs and slowly share the same beating heart

It is also a story about an impassioned, uncontrollable desire to consume.
The queer definition of romantic cannibalism. To be driven by something you can't control.
Do you try to remember who you are, who they where and try not to lose sight and become the worst parts of you?
Or, do give yourself over to someone else, trusting they will treat you with a gentle touch and if it came down to it?
Consume the very essence of you, Bones and All.
