Hello, nothing cool to see here
I want to create some sort of chicken lore, and design more chicken OCs, so I'll be pouring out all my thoughts here! I'll eventually organize them lol. Heavy wip
If you happen to see typos or wanna suggest, please feel free to message! same with questions
Lore-related chicken OCs at the bottom!
Basilisks (Breed)
-Just another breed of chicken, like your average rhode island red or silkie
PHYSICAL TRAITS:
-Commonly larger than your average choop- but that doesn't mean stronger. In fact, they're often uncoordinated and clumsy, and can't handle their own body mass
-A prominent pair of horns on their head
BEHAVIORIAL TRAITS:
-Instead of living in communitities (flocks, townships), they prefer to live on their own or in small groups of around five
-Feed mainly on bugs and small prey, tend to dislike fruits/veggies/grains
OUTSIDE PERCEPTION/STIGMA
-People fear them due to made up stories of them harming and even eating other chickens (Chickens in general are big opportunists, and wouldn't hesitate, and while I want to stick true to their true nature as much as possible I won't get much into that)
^ Like, I imagine mama hens will tell their chicks about the spooky dangerous basilisks, mainly to get them to behave
-Since they don't live in communities, they're often treated as outsiders, even if they're just passing through. Many chickens will eye them and back away, and some shopkeepers even refuse to sell to them.
-Their horns and larger size further accentuate other chicken's skewed view of them.
EXTRA: As stated at the beginning, they're just another breed of chicken- meaning it's 100% possible for them to have chicks with any other chicken! It's once again rare, and hybrid babies are seen as taboo. Whether the chick hatches with horns or not really makes all the difference, as a chick can easily hide their origins (Or may not even know they're a hybrid) if they're born without. I imagine there's a 50/50 chance for either.
(*side note, idk if anyone will, but if you wanna make a chook oc fof of this feel free to! Please do @ me, I'd love to see what designs/lore you come up with if any)
WORLDBUILDINGG
I want to make a map of their world eventually!
Community concepts:
Tavelling flocks- large nomadic communities of chickens that free range the lands, never stay in one place for more than three days. They greatly value their connection to nature and their communities. They're very resourceful and adaptable. They're uncommon, but not unheard of- in fact, if you travel semi-often, you're likely to encounter one, or witness their travel from afar. The average travelling flock is very generous and accepting of new and temporary members offering protection in exchange for labor. Some flocks, however tend to be wary due to past experiences or simply tradition. The largest flocks have upwards of a hundred chickens, while the smaller ones sport around 15 individuals minimum.
Township flocks- Sedentary chicken communities that work together to build settlements, farm, and grow outwards. They often collectively expect eachother to contribute, and are very weary of predators. While each township is indivdually founded, they all share one common currency, as well as trading. These villages can have hundreds of chickens at once, usually becoming hot spots for trading and crime. Usually, the smaller a township is, the more tight-knit the community.
Cabals- This is technically a derogatory term chickens call families of basilisks, but it's become widely used and more common to refer to them as. Compromising of 2-6 individuals, a chicken oh so rarely comes across them, as they roost deep in the woods and away from civillization.
*Each flock often contains diverse breeds of chickens, and as of more recent times, mixed chicks. However, depending on each species' individual behaviors, you may be more likely to find certain breeds more common in one type of flock as opposed to another. A good example of this is a silkie chicken- due to their docile temperment and their strong mothering instincts, you're more likely to find both hens and roosters in townships. They often prefer the extra safery and a homey place to raise their young. This does not, however, stop plenty of silkies from joining a travelling flock.*
*NOT FULLY DECIDED BUT- Only one kingdom in this world, and quite independent- other than their claimed range for farming, they don't rule over any land. It features a busy village surrounded by a tall range of mountains that are practically impossible to travel over and a giant fortified wall for protection where the mountains don't reach. it has a big palace on the inside, where the royalty lives and rules. This town holds a lot of discrimination towards chickens who don't hold a solid or nearly-solid feather color pallette. Multicolroed chicks are undesirable, and it's in the royalty's highest interest to breed down pure lines of chickens. Prince Lilac isn't an exception- due to his genetic mutation, causing a lac of pigment in the majority of his feathers, is looked down upon for not being uniform to his family, and despite being the firstborn prince, is 3rd in line to the throne, his two younger brothers being prioritized. The kingdom isn't looked upon with wander, in fact- knowing their ideals- mos chickens, including Marrow, actively avoid their land. However, if you're a monochrome chicken, you will be offered a life with garunteed safety and work- which is what causes a lot of chickens to be drawn to it. (might chage this in the futue btw, but i'm trying to collect solid chicks of every color, and since I like the idea of their being some sort of a kingdom, I figured I'd add it into the lore somehow lol)
NOW FOR THE ACTUAL STORYBUILDING
I have hardly thought of this at all lol
The main character is marrow, listed somewhere below. She's no specific breed, but part bantam, and smaller than the average chicken. She doesn't care much for being part of a community, but she's fascinated by the culture of different places. She occasionally settles down in townships, and sometimes she temporarily joins traveling flocks. She often ends up solving problems and helping within the community.
Eventually, she comes across a Basilisk who calls himself Splash while trekking down a dird path. It was causual, and she almost didn't register him or what he was as he walked by. it caught his attention, as he's grown to expect hens cowering in protective fear or roosters crowing loud warnings his way.
wether Marrow registered it or not at first, he'll never know. However, she didn't. it wouldn't really matter- she's already done extensive research into the breed of chickens, and while this is the first Basilisk she's met in person, she's been in much scarier situations, and doesn't blink an eye when he taps her shoulder with his wing and asks for her name.
Okay thats it so far. I'll add more as it comes lol
Current Basilisk chickens in this world:
Other Chickens in this world:
I'll of course add to this over time!! As well as maybe format better, and i defin want to add bios and their backstories, as well as multiple related and unrelated side stories
