Magpies: A Guide

Page by Kokichi

Hello! I'm Kokichi, also known elsewhere as soreile.arc or just Sora. You may have looked at my chickens and gone hey, what are those multi-limbed bird raptor thing doodles?

Those are magpies, an original fantasy species created for a worldbuild of mine! And I have brought them here to Chicken.pet in a limited capacity! This page will be expanded with more information on magpies as I feel up for it, so stay tuned.

Magpie Basics

Magpies are a species of sapient, highly magical feathered avians with 12 limbs: one pair of arms similar to a dromaeosaurid's with articulate hands (three fingers and an opposable thumb), two sets of legs, and three sets of wings that rest above the shoulder/hip of the arm and leg pairs. They have three eyes with rhombus-shaped pupils that can either appear bright or dark, and a single pair of horns that are unique to each magpie and can even include pieces that appear to float separately from the rest of the horn! They have long lizard-like tails that are highly flexible and can wrap around branches.

Magpies live for hundreds of years and many are adept at casting magic by singing, appealing directly to the world's heart and persuading it to enact their will through the conviction of their feelings. They are usually quite friendly! Magpie society does not have an inherent concept of gender, and magpie language uses the pronoun "se" for most people and "nei" for gods and accomplished mages. As English loanwords, these can be used as "se / ser (rhymes with their)" and "nei / neir". Their self-directed use of gendered pronouns when speaking English are vibes-based and arbitrary.

Magpies, unlike chickens, are always countershaded (that is, have a paler version of their main coloration on their underside) unless they are fully white or fully black in coloration. They never have true beaks, and always have teeth (though narrow, beaklike snouts have been seen, and their teeth may not be visible when their mouths are closed). Very importantly, their body layout is NOT like a centaur's! While they do have two arms and four legs, these are attached to one continuous torso that may arch slightly but does not bend sharply upright. Outside the context of Chicken.pet, all magpies would function like the site's ZZW chickens for breeding purposes, but site limitations are what they are.

So You Want to Have a Magpie?

"Wow," you may be thinking, "magpies sound super cool! Can I have a magpie character?"

The answer is: probably! This isn't a closed species, but please do not create and sell magpie designs for profit, and do not use magpies in any commercial works. If you want to make yourself a magpie OC for your personal enjoyment/RP/whatever, feel free, I'm not your parent and won't stop you. I would strongly prefer to be credited for making them though.

I may offer to make magpie designs for people as payment for things on the site as my inspiration and energy allows. If you obtain a magpie this way, that is your character! Do whatever you want with it, outside of using the species in commercial works or selling for real world currency!

I may also attach magpie designs to chickens I breed and sell. If you obtain a magpie this way, the design will be clearly marked as being attached to that specific chicken. It is yours to use as long as you have ownership of that chicken. If you trade, sell, release, or pullet the chicken, send the magpie design along with it. Those are for "the current owner of that chicken".
